The mass image is that old grant. Much is taken, to be kept to enrich oneself. If there were an understanding that abundance neither works nor empties, that of giving without expectation and without return would fit into the world of everything overflowing. All too often, this self-evidence serves a frugal effortlessness. The contemplation of emptiness also leads to the latter, but the wealth of creation here is one of letting go. On a large scale, the image of the connected life is one of enriching and giving away: a path of humility and patience, unutilised reciprocity. However, withdrawal also applies to those who become all too accustomed to what has been provided or given.
